Hiring activity recovers 5% in July as compared to June

The countrywide relaxations and re-opening of industries have paved the way for slight recovery in hiring activities but the Y-O-Y hiring is still down by 47% in July 2020, according to the Naukri JobSpeak Index.

As per the findings, key sectors such as Recruitment /Employment (37%), Media/Entertainment (36%) and Construction/Engineering (27%) drove hiring activity in July'20 as compared to June'20. Industries such as BFSI (16%), Auto (14%), Telecom (13%) and IT-Hardware (9%) continue to improve in recruitment activities while the IT-Software sector (0%) was flat sequentially. Education/Teaching (-22%), Hospitality (-5%) & Retail (-2%) sectors saw a decline even in sequential comparisons.

Industries like Hotel/Restaurant/Airlines/Travel (-80%), Retail (-71%), Real Estate (-60%) and Oil & Gas/Power (-58%) continue to struggle in the month of July'20 versus last year same time. While, key sectors such as BPO/ITES (-42%), FMCG (-39%), Pharma/Biotech (-38%), IT-Hardware (-30%) and Medical/Healthcare (-20%) were least impacted in hiring Y-O-Y.

Pawan Goyal, Chief Business Officer, Naukri.com said, "July'20 marks marginal recovery in month-on-month hiring activities. Industries such as Recruitment /Employment, Media/Entertainment and Construction/Engineering bounce back with positive signs in hiring M-O-M as lockdown restrictions are eased further. While the Y-O-Y hiring is still impacted leading to a decline of 47% in July' 20, it is interesting to see emerging cities leading the way in job market recovery versus metros which are declining by more than 50%."

The report also shed a light on city wise perspective. It was found that metro cities like Delhi/NCR (10%), Mumbai (8%) and Chennai (4%) witnessed a sequential growth in hiring. On the other hand, Bengaluru and Kolkata declined sequentially by 4% each. Tier 2 cities such as Jaipur, Vadodara and Chandigarh continue to see much more growth in recruitment activities than the metros.

The demand for job roles in Production/Maintenance (6%), Pharma/Media (5%), Marketing/Advertising (4%) and Sales/Business Development (4%) saw a slight increase sequentially.

However, recruitment for professionals in the Hospitality and Teaching/Education sector was most impacted.
